Being an essential part of Hawaiian Airlines has become a family affair for a mother-and-daughter-pilot duo, Captain Kamelia Zarka, and First Officer and daughter Maria Zarka. Recently, the dynamic duo both piloted a Boeing 717 to several destinations within the Hawaiian island chain. To top off this special moment, an all-female cabin crew was onboard to further celebrate female power in aviation!
It’s been almost a century since Hawaiian Airlines has been in existence and it just made history thanks to the trailblazing Zarkas. This isn’t the first time that mom, Anaseini “Kamelia” (Lino) Zarka, who was born and raised in the Kingdom of Tonga, has been breaking boundaries, however.
She became the first Tongan woman to captain a commercial aircraft, an impressive feat that helped inspire her daughters to pursue careers in aviation. Her younger daughter, Kaimana, is pursuing her aeronautical science degree at Embry-Riddle University in Arizona and has completed her Private and Instrument licenses. Looks like this trio could make history again!
